$22.99

Paperback
:

God's world is full of good things. Ice-cold lemonade. The laughter of children. College football. Scrambled eggs and crispy bacon. A late night with old friends around a blazing campfire. God certainly knows how to give good gifts to his children. But where is the line when it comes to enjoying all the pleasurable things our world affords? In The Things of Earth, professor Joe Rigney offers perplexed Christians a breath of fresh air by lifting the burden of false standards and impossible expectations related to the Christian life-freeing readers to gratefully embrace every good thing we receive from the hand of God. Helping us avoid our tendency to forget the Giver on the one hand and neglect his gifts on the other, this much-needed book reminds us that God's blessings should drive us to worship and that a passion for God's glory can be as wide as the world itself.

How do we enjoy God's gifts?
5 stars By Aaron, Sep 10 2018
This is a great book on a topic that isn't addressed all that much - How do we enjoy God's gifts? I appreciate that in this book, Rigney begins with strong theological foundations by exploring the trinity and it's implications for Christian living. The rest of the book builds on each previous to helpfully guide readers to better understand how we to enjoy the things of the earth. Rigney also thorough covers the questions and objections that he assumes readers may raise throughout the book.

Great book. I'd recommend it to any Christians who wants to better understand how we are to enjoy the created things in a way that glorifies God.

Relevant for Christians living in the West
5 stars By Julz, Oct 31 2015
When I first saw this book in desiringgod.org, I was grateful that there's someone that God uses to answer my questions: what to do with the things of the earth, is it wrong to enjoy God's gifts, how we glorify God without idolizing his gifts? This book seeks to answer these questions, so if you've been struggling with guilt when you enjoy God's gifts, then this book is for you. If I can summarize the message of this book is that God's good gifts in earthly things should make you love Him more, praise Him more, see Him more in the good gifts we enjoy. Rigney explains that we should avoid two extremes, i.e. asceticism (denying pleasures) and idolizing pleasures. He also gives readers practical steps on how to live a Godward life, i.e. glorifying God in His gifts without idolizing them.
