A tragedy from the past resurfaces in this tale of family secrets and reignited love.

After her mother's death twelve years ago, Lynette Carlisle watched her close-knit family unravel. One by one, her four older siblings left their Nantucket home and never returned. All seem to harbor animosity toward their father, silently blaming him for their mother's death. Nobody will talk about that dreadful day, and Lynette can't remember a bit of it.

But when next-door neighbor Nicholas Cooper returns to Nantucket, he brings the past with him. Once her brother's best friend and Lynette's first crush, Nick seems to hiding things from her. Lynette wonders what he knows about the day her mother died and hopes he might help her remember the things she can't.

But Nick has no intention of telling Lynette the truth. Besides the damage it might cause his own family, he doesn't want to risk harming the fragile friendship between him and the woman he once thought of as a kid sister.

As their father's failing health and financial concerns bring the Carlisle siblings home, secrets begin to surface-secrets that will either restore their shattered relationships or separate the siblings forever. But pulling up anchor on the past propels them into the perfect storm, powerful enough to make them question all they ever believed in.

Wow! Talk about hidden depths!
5 stars By Andrea, Aug 28 2016
The first four chapters of The Things We Knew are from the points of view of two people, Lynette and Nick. There's chemistry there, lots of it, fuelled by desperation, problems with their fathers, and old secrets. Just as I'm getting to know these two characters, enter Lynette's four older siblings, all with agendas and problems of their own ...centre stage just got bigger!

What follows is an absorbing and intriguing tale of a fractured family trying to cope with an immediate crisis and each other, while Lynette unravels a past mystery.

Catherine West's novels are written from a Christian world view, but they are never religious, which earns a huge tick from me. Her stories are realistic, and her characters deal with the harsher things in life; in this case, repressed memories, alcohol and drug addiction, physical and emotional abuse, and Alzheimers disease.

There's a depth to this novel, a depth I wasn't expecting but thoroughly enjoyed. If you're a lover of stories that include romance, mystery and complicated family relationships, The Things We Knew is the perfect book for you.

Excellent writing but plot issues for me
4 stars By Iola, Jul 29 2016
Parts of the plot seemed contrived to me.

The was a secret which didn't get disclosed until almost the end. The reason this bothered me is it felt like Lynette had been keeping secrets from the reader because there were things she knew, things she'd done, that she (as the main viewpoint character) never let the reader see. I think it took away from the tension, because the secret was actually a major plot point. I would have liked to have followed that part of her personal character arc, but was deprived of that.

Overall, this was a solid novel. I think it could have been excellent, but there were too many undisclosed secrets and that didn't work for me.
