A selection of prayers and meditations in the Puritan tradition, widely valued since publication in 1975.

- Publisher The strength of Puritan character and life lay in prayer and meditation. In this practice the spirit of prayer was regarded as of first importance and the best form of prayer, for living prayer is the characteristic of genuine spirituality. Yet prayer is also vocal and may therefore on occasions be written. Consequently in the Puritan tradition there are many written prayers and meditations which constitute an important corpus of inspiring devotional literature. Too often ex tempore prayer lacks variety, order and definiteness. The reason for this lies partly in a neglect of due preparation. It is here that the care and scriptural thoroughness which others found necessary in their approach to God may be of help. This book has been prepared not to 'supply' prayers but to prompt and encourage the Christian as he treads the path on which others have gone before.

Inspired to pray
5 stars By Mike, Nov 30 2017
The Valley of Vision gives prayers written by the Puritans for the reader to pray through and meditate on. They are thoroughly God-centred prayers, and a go-to for me when I need direction on what to say or how to pray when feeling like I don't have the words to say.

Highly recommended as an aid to your prayer life.

The Heart of the Puritans
5 stars By Chad, Sep 27 2017
The Puritans were known for their vigorous pursuit of holiness and their rich theology. Read any Puritan and you would see the depth of their understanding of God's word and you would get a sense that these men were somehow different to us modern Christians. But Valley of Vision gets behind the scenes of it all. It shows us the heart and the struggles of these men who we revere as heroes of the faith. On every single page of this book are the prayers of godly men who cry out to God asking Him to make them conformed to the image of Christ, for forgiveness. Not only that but we also see their praises and their love of God. It's in these pages where you realise that the Puritans were no different to us, in that we like them also have to trust in the same God and struggle with the same sins as they. I would recommend Valley of Vision to the believer who wants to cultivate a deeper love for God, this book won't disappoint.

Life changing.
5 stars By Daniel, May 02 2017
The valley of vision is a book of Puritan prayers collected and compiled into categories ranging from penitence to needs and devotions, and many more. This book is worth its weight in gold, as it contains many prayers which have been written from a deep reflection upon God's Word and His truth. This book changed my prayer life as it helped me to pray all the kinds of things I'd love to pray but could never think of, of the top of my head. Valley of vision has helped me to grieve over my sin more, to feel the weight of my helplessness and more importantly point me to the all sufficient Jesus Christ who alone could save a wretch like me.

Theologically Rich Puritan Prayers
5 stars By Kylie T, Nov 06 2016
This rich collection of Purtian prayers have been compiled from men who walked close to God, remained deeply rooted in the Word and cried their souls out before the Lord. What lies within this book, therefore, are the earnest, heartfelt, soul wrenching prayers of men who came before the Lord with deep vulnerability and a richness of Scripture; who abhorred their sin and adored their God; and who desired to see Him glorified through their lives and prayers. These prayers will lead the reader to cry out to God from the depths of their hearts and souls, as well as helping shape and develop rich, theologically sound, God-glorifying prayerfullness. With the prayers within being so deep, rich and theologically grounded, they can not only be used to lead one into deeper, richer prayerfullness but can also be meditated over daily, with a chart for such having been freely published.

I recommend this book to all Christians, as one to never find itself neglected upon the shelf but to be continuously prayed through and meditated upon.

One of the finest books of prayers available
5 stars By Andrew, Feb 25 2014
This collection of prayers is unmatched. Ordered by theme, Bennett has skilfully drawn together the prayers of some of the giants of the Puritan era. The prayers are honest, searching, theologically rich but also beautiful pieces of literature. Reading these amazing written prayers challenges me in my own prayer life pushing me to declare the majesty of God and my own desperate need. You WILL love this book.
