Action-packed
3 stars By Rebecca Abbott, Apr 12 2007
THE VISTATION paints a chilling picture of the destructive power and influence that false prophets can wield. In an age where everyone is looking for something to believe in, this DVD is a timely reminder that not everyone who paints themselves as a servant of Christ is trustworthy.

Based on the thrilling novel by Frank Peretti, the movie begins with media snapshots following the brutal murder of a woman in the sleepy, rural town of Antioch. Years later, the town has become plagued by strange occurrences: a man survives a fatal car crash, odd supernatural figures are sighted, a crucifix weeps real tears and miraculous healings begin.

In an attempt to make sense of these happenings, the town's ministers draw together for a meeting. They invite ex-minister, Travis Jordan, who was the husband of the murdered woman. Since then, Travis had left the faith and battled with doubt and depression. However, he eventually agrees to join the hunt to find the source of these events.

All evidence points to one man: Brandon Nichols - a self-proclaimed prophet. As most of the town flock to Brandon for miraculous healings, only Travis and the new town vet, Morgan Elliott, remain unconvinced.

Brandon's claims about his identity become wilder, until he suggests he is Jesus himself. As Brandon's power grows, the chilling truth about his motives and the source of his power begin to be revealed. It's up to Travis to unravel this truth, which in turn unlocks some of his own painful past.

This DVD is action-packed and contains enough suspense to have you gripping your seat. While the scene editing is a bit clumsy in places and the characters are not as well developed as in the book, the film's quick pace, coupled with good acting, helps overlook these faults.

As the film's M rating suggests, this is definitely for mature audiences only, with disturbing scenes and supernatural themes throughout. However, there is no gratuitous violence or horror. Rather the film accurately portrays evil, giving a graphic warning about the spiritual forces that war against all Christians. It also honestly explores the theme of faith and trust in God, and emphasises the ultimate triumph of true faith.

THE VISITATION is a solid attempt to bring Peretti's exciting portrayal of spiritual warfare to the screen.
