From the New York Times bestselling author of The Wedding Dress comes a new captivating novel of secrets, romance, and two women bound together across time by a shared dream.

Tenley Roth's first book was a runaway bestseller. Now that her second book is due, she's locked in fear. Can she repeat her earlier success or is she a fraud who has run out of inspiration?

With pressure mounting from her publisher, Tenley is weighted with writer's block. But when her estranged mother calls asking Tenley to help her through chemotherapy, she packs up for Florida where she meets handsome furniture designer Jonas Sullivan and discovers the story her heart's been missing.

A century earlier, another woman wrote at the same desk with hopes and fears of her own. Born during the Gilded Age, Birdie Shehorn is the daughter of the old money Knickerbockers. Under the strict control of her mother, her every move is decided ahead of time, even whom she'll marry. But Birdie has dreams she doesn't know how to realize. She wants to tell stories, write novels, make an impact on the world. When she discovers her mother has taken extreme measures to manipulate her future, she must choose between submission and security or forging a brand new way all on her own.

Tenley and Birdie are from two very different worlds, but fate has bound them together in a way time cannot erase.

Beautifully Rounded Out

I enjoyed the cross-generational interweaving of these stories and families. The way He is able to bring beauty from ashes and restore broken hearts.

Somewhat good.
3 stars By Ibu Guru, May 08 2018
The author has amazing skill to weave together a story from 4 points of view. My caution is that, though the reality of chemotherapy is well researched and presented, the reality of sexual immorality's risks and consequences is not. A young person could get the impression that if her boyfriend had multiple partners before marriage - all is forgiven when they repent and there are no consequences. "Marry him and be happy. " Where I live in an area approximately 50kms by 25kms there are 20 people a month dying of AIDs with 700 confirmed cases HIV positive. Some of these are Christians but they do not escape. The world would vaccinate you for HPV and tell you about "safe sex" but they admit there really is no cure for viruses. Grudgingly they admit God's standard of faithfulness will prevent STDs. Where are the Christian novellists who will write about premarital tests for STDs and counting the cost if the beloved has siphilis etc? I have yet to meet one. And the funerals here continue...

Best of it's genre I've read
5 stars By Margot , Mar 27 2018
I'll admit to struggling with some of Rachel Hauck's dual timeline books, which she seems to specialise in lately. Not because they are poorly written, but because of the way my busy lifestyle forces me to read - in little bursts, leaving me somewhat puzzled about which timeline I'm in when I just read a few pages at a time. But, circumstances allowed me to read The Writing desk in a more leisurely fashion, and I loved it.
In the historical story, Birdie, who has a passion for writing novels, is being pressured into marriage by her wealthy parents. In the present-day story Tenley, the daughter and great-great-granddaughter of successful novelists, has written a bestseller but is now facing writer's block. There's romance, reconciliation, mystery and inspiration in this fascinating story that will both entertain and build your faith.
I would recommend this to anyone with time to read it in big chunks, or, better yet, a single setting!

Beautiful
5 stars By Kara, Feb 04 2018
Rachel Hauck has created a beautiful story, connecting two women on a journey of self discovery. A simple plain writing desk is the link and their love for writing their passion. This book was both inspiring and a warning about being honest to who you are and not letting fear lead you astray.

Recommended for those who enjoy dual-timeline stories.
5 stars By Iola, Jul 29 2017
Rachel Hauck's most recent novels have all featured a present-day romance and a historical romance, with something that connects the two.

No prizes for guessing what the connection is in The Writing Desk ...

I have to say that at the beginning, I was a lot more intrigued by Bridie's story than by Tenley's.
Most of Tenley's problems appeared self-inflicted. Bridie's problems were mostly caused by a controlling Mama whose idea of good parenting was to do what was best for Mama with little or no regard for anyone else. Bridie least of all.

But I grew more and more interested in Tenley's story as the novel progressed.
She befriends Jonas, who has the large, close-knit family she always dreamed of, and begins to investigate his Christian faith. Yes, this is Christian romance, although the faith aspects are subtle to the point a reader might not even notice.

Bridie had her own subtle faith journey as well, although the focus of her story was more on her impending marriage, and her writing. Yes, Bridie was also a writer. I thought I'd picked up the connection between Tenley and Bridie early on (and the twist), but there was a lot more to the connection.
