There is a God

Antony G Flew

$24.99

Paperback

A wave of modern atheists have taken center stage and brought the long-standing debate about the existence of God back into the headlines. Spearheaded by Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Christopher Hitchens, this "new atheism" has found a powerful place in today's culture wars. Although this movement has been billed as "new," the foundation of its argument is indebted to philosopher Antony Flew and his groundbreaking paper "Theology and Falsification," the most widely reprinted philosophical publication of the last five decades.

Flew built his highly acclaimed academic career publicly debunking the existence of God. But now the renowned philosopher has arrived at the opposite conclusion and officially joined the other side. With refreshing openness to argument and an absence of the anger and hostility that have been hallmarks of the "new atheism," Flew shows how his commitment to following the argument wherever it leads resulted, to his own astonishment, in his conversion to belief in a creator God. Certain to be read and discussed for years to come, There Is a God will forever change the debate about the existence of God.

In "There Is a God," one of the world's preeminent atheists discloses how his commitment to "follow the argument wherever it leads" led him to a belief in God as Creator. This is a compelling and refreshingly open-minded argument that will forever change the atheism debate.

Easy, read, faith making
4 stars By Hamish, Oct 05 2012
I first read this book as a 16 year old worried about the formation of the so called "New Atheist" movement in 2006 with the publication of the 'God delusion'. Flew's book is short and easy to read and tackles this movement head on - and the interesting thing is that he was a proponent if not the instigator of this movement back in the mid 20th century! The first half is his biography, short and brief very easy to read. He describes how his paper published in the 1950's ('Theology and Falsification') made C.S. Lewis tear up in defeat at a debate at Oxford.
But that is mentioned early on (and not dwelled upon, and passed by quickly.

Where I suggest to start is halfway were Flew discusses his arguments, very helpful, very simple and they're the ones Flew explains will never be explained away by this movement. This book is very much unknown, but I personally feel it should be more popular for its simplicity. For a 16 year old I was able to on-board the arguments and they've really helped me ever since, not only in my own faith, but in conversations with others

It must be said that Flew never became a Christian as he states in this book, but he does provide for us Appendix II where he describes how Jesus is the best and only argument for the existence of a God who has revealed himself. It's an interesting brief discussion and provides a good launching pad into historical inquiry if you're so inclined to travel down that path.

I'd recommend this book to those who want a brief read on the topic of arguments against those of the new Atheists, they're simple, not bullet proof, but very good. The 2 Appendices are also very good reads (very short).
