Harriet Sherwood has always adored her grandmother. But when Harriet decides to follow her footsteps to fight for social justice, she certainly never expected her efforts to land her in jail. Nor did she expect her childhood enemy and notorious school bully, Tommy O'Reilly, to be the arresting officer.

Languishing in a jail cell, Harriet has plenty of time to sift through the memories of the three generations of women who have preceded her. As each story emerges, the strength of her family--and their deep faith in the God of justice and righteousness--brings Harriet to discovery of her own goals and motives for pursuing them.

4 stars By Lisa, Nov 06 2014
I'd like to give this one 4.5 stars. I love Lynn Austin but this wasn't my very favorite of hers. It hopped through three generations and sometimes that can be disappointing when you want to hear more about one and are forced to see things through the eyes of another in the next chapter. Having said that, I loved the characters and the tenacity they showed through their different ordeals. I will keep this on my shelf and share it with my friends.

Awesome!
5 stars By Audrey, Jul 09 2014
This book was so good. It was well written. The story just flowed without any effort. Even though it is about a young women looking back at her predecessors and telling their stories.I felt involved and interested all the way through. The moral of the story was great and I felt I could relate totally and in fact I think most Christians that wonder about God's purpose for their lives will relate to this book. I loved how our main character came to understand that it is not doing great things that bring fulfillment but living in relationship with God. I have to say that as always Lynn Austin writes winners. Every book of hers that I have read just challenges me in such amazing way that I feel I walk away changed after reading a book of hers.

Enjoyable read - powerful message
4 stars By Sarah Wales, Feb 22 2010
In Austin's stand-alone novel, Though Waters Roar, the story of Grandma Bebe is told through the memories of her granddaughter, Harriet. Both Harriet and Grandma Bebe have in common jail time, plain looks and a fighting spirit. Harriet's own experiences unfold as she sifts through the memories of her childhood, and the influence her Grandma Bebe has had on her life. Set in the jail cell that Harriet occupies, things become more complicated when she comes in contact with Tommy O'Reilly - her childhood bully. Ultimately, Harriet comes to recognise the reason for some of her actions and comes to rely on the Lord in a new way. Austin's intricately woven plot makes this book an enjoyable read with a powerful Christian message.
