The author reminds the reader that the Puritans were men of deep theological understanding and vision who prayed for the earth to be filled with the knowledge of the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. Historically the Puritan epoch is best able to supple the teaching that engenders holy living and stability. They were strongest where the churches in general are weakest today.

An Excellent Introduction to the Puritans
5 stars By Dr. Bernard Low, Feb 01 2017
In this excellent book, Hulse masterfully tells the story of the Puritans - how they started and developed, the principles and convictions they stood for, the legacy they left behind, and the reasons for their decline. His story also includes brief accounts of the lives of some notable Puritans whose ministries altogether spanned three generations from the 1500s to 1700s. Following these accounts, Hulse proceeds to share about the legacy these Puritans left behind and what modern-day evangelicals can learn from them in the areas of the doctrines of assurance, justification, divine sovereignty and human responsibility, Lord's Day observance, marriage and the family, spiritual experience, the primacy of preaching, and the reality of sin. For the reader not acquainted with the Puritans, this book is an excellent introduction to them. If the church today wants to be healthy, she needs to recover the spirit of Puritanism. Highly recommended.
