Short Description:
Set in America's South in the 1970s and based on a true story, this inspiring movie explores how Christian faith heals deep social divisions and prejudices. As riots erupt across the city, a newly mixed-race high school football team presents its coach with huge challenges - until an outsider brings a message of hope.

A gifted high school football player must learn to boldly embrace his talent and his faith as he battles racial tensions on and off the field in WOODLAWN. This moving and inspirational new film is based on the true story of how love and unity overcame hate and division in early 1970s Birmingham, Alabama.

Tony Nathan (Caleb Castille) lands in a powder keg of anger and violence when he joins fellow African-American students at Woodlawn High School after its government-mandated desegregation in 1973. The Woodlawn Colonels football team is a microcosm of the problems at the school and in the city, which erupts in cross burnings and riots, and Coach Tandy Gerelds (Nic Bishop) is at a loss to solve these unprecedented challenges with his disciplinarian ways.

It's only when Hank (Sean Astin), an outsider who has been radically affected by the message of hope and love he experienced at a Christian revival meeting, convinces Coach Gerelds to let him speak to the team that something truly remarkable begins to happen. More than 40 players, nearly the entire team, black and white, give their lives over to the "better way" Hank tells them is possible through following Jesus, and the change is so profound in them it affects their coach, their school and their community in ways no one could have imagined.

Fantastic True Story
5 stars By David, Jan 23 2018
I really love this movie. American football and dealing with racism are the backdrop to this movie - but it focussed on actual true events of what God can do amongst a community by his people. It brings a clear message on how Christians must act to be obedient to God and what great things that might lead to. It doesn't clearly explain what the central gospel message is, but talks around it enough to encourage Christians and challenge not-yet-Christians to want to ask more. Nothing unsuitable for pre-teens and great motivation for Christians of all ages, especially if you're involved in sport. The extras are amazing - including interviews with the real people and lots of people expressing their thanks to Jesus.

Amazing true story
5 stars By Dori, Jul 07 2016
The film does a very good job of following the facts that occurred. How amazing to discover that a Billy Graham revival spread into a racist high school and brought not only the two rival football teams together, but dramatically changed the lives of those who were in anyway involved in the team. It moved me to see how the coach's baptism changed him. Although the film is about football, it is actually about love and forgiveness. Mostly it shows how a commitment to Jesus by many young people had real and lasting results. A favorite line from the film was "if you want to dream new dreams, you need to let the old dreams die." In other words, when you decide to follow Jesus he will fulfill you in much better and bigger ways than you had in mind.
How powerful and searing to see the terrible black and white footage of segregation in the South, but then so encouraging to see how love and caring overcame so much hatred. Even though an angry school administrator pulled the mic cord on the Lord's Prayer, the stadium full of parents and fans continued to pray together without being led. I hope I have the courage and conviction to stick to my believes and share my faith. I am sure we do not have so much opposition as the students did in the 1970s, so we can learn much
