Short Description:
Set in America's South in the 1970s and based on a true story, this inspiring movie explores how Christian faith heals deep social divisions and prejudices. As riots erupt across the city, a newly mixed-race high school football team presents its coach with huge challenges - until an outsider brings a message of hope.

A gifted high school football player must learn to boldly embrace his talent and his faith as he battles racial tensions on and off the field in WOODLAWN. This moving and inspirational new film is based on the true story of how love and unity overcame hate and division in early 1970s Birmingham, Alabama.

Tony Nathan (Caleb Castille) lands in a powder keg of anger and violence when he joins fellow African-American students at Woodlawn High School after its government-mandated desegregation in 1973. The Woodlawn Colonels football team is a microcosm of the problems at the school and in the city, which erupts in cross burnings and riots, and Coach Tandy Gerelds (Nic Bishop) is at a loss to solve these unprecedented challenges with his disciplinarian ways.

It's only when Hank (Sean Astin), an outsider who has been radically affected by the message of hope and love he experienced at a Christian revival meeting, convinces Coach Gerelds to let him speak to the team that something truly remarkable begins to happen. More than 40 players, nearly the entire team, black and white, give their lives over to the "better way" Hank tells them is possible through following Jesus, and the change is so profound in them it affects their coach, their school and their community in ways no one could have imagined.

Excellent on several levels
5 stars By Lynette, Aug 04 2018
This is a quality movie that just tells the story as it really happened. The message is simple yet extremely effective, especially when putting it in the volatile time frame the events took place (1970s). It is really inspiring to watch a quiet young man become someone his community looks up to, and how, through the strength of Jesus Christ, the entire football team puts their lives in His hands with amazing changes for the, their school and far beyond. Their faithfulness and cohesiveness is powerful and the messages given by Sean Astin, are simple and uncomplicated and for that reason, very effective. Highly recommended for anyone, especially youth and young adults.

Entertaining story
4 stars By Jared, Mar 08 2018
Woodlawn is a fairly typical Christian based faith film. However, it is interesting as it is based on a true story and follows a team that comes to faith in Christ and the transformational impact upon a city. If you enjoy sport you will like this more but anyone can enjoy the message of reconciliation and bridging divides.

Fantastic True Story
5 stars By David, Jan 23 2018
I really love this movie. American football and dealing with racism are the backdrop to this movie - but it focussed on actual true events of what God can do amongst a community by his people. It brings a clear message on how Christians must act to be obedient to God and what great things that might lead to. It doesn't clearly explain what the central gospel message is, but talks around it enough to encourage Christians and challenge not-yet-Christians to want to ask more. Nothing unsuitable for pre-teens and great motivation for Christians of all ages, especially if you're involved in sport. The extras are amazing - including interviews with the real people and lots of people expressing their thanks to Jesus.
